Robot Farmer
Geoff Strang uses research and development strategies to work smarter and faster with ever-improving accuracy. He specializes in electro/mechanical and robotic/automation systems.
Background
Geoff's accomplished career in automation and robotics began at Fanshawe College where he graduated as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist. At the workplace, Geoff earned a reputation for being an expert in robotic laser cutting systems and automated production. Now as an independent consultant, Geoff applies his skills and experience on-and-off-farm. Click here for information about automation and customization projects at Strang Farms. |
Career highlights:
- At Formet Industries (a division of Cosma under the umbrella of Magna International), Geoff was a member of a small, specialized team of industrial robotics maintenance technicians that provided both long-term and emergency support. The manufacturing plant contained over 1200 Fanuc, Reis, ABB and Motoman robots.
- As the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Engineer at Formet, Geoff led several programs, including: development of high speed laser cutting techniques in both mild and martensitic steels; design of specialized laser cutting tips that utilized LAVAL airflow principles; and design and implementation of ultra-low resistance ground loop return systems for enhanced capacitive sensing feedback as used on all laser distance sensing heads.
- He worked with the manufacturer and AGV systems integrator to implement, troubleshoot, and maintain a fleet of wireless guidance AGV’s for transport of truck frame modules from line to line.
- Geoff spearheaded Formet's efforts to implement the first high volume production use of IPG Photonics new Diode Pumped Ytterbium Fiber Laser design including all critical laser cutting system design features (optical configuration, capacitive sensing, assist gas delivery, etc.).
- As the Program Manager for Formet's PRIMA Rapido 5-Axis Laser System Integration, Geoff led the site installation of 13 next generation 1-micron wavelength PRIMA/IPG Rapido 5-axis laser cutting machines, as required to handle the massive influx of Hot Form business. Geoff was recognized for his expertise in this field and was selected to present his ideas about the technical and logistical considerations for laser processing of Hot Form materials to Cosma Global at the international Hot Stamping Conference.
